About De Veluwezoom National Park

De Veluwezoom National Park, established in 1930, spans over 5,400 hectares of the scenic Veluwe region in Gelderland province. It is characterized by a unique blend of natural features including expansive heathlands that flower vibrantly in late summer, dense deciduous and coniferous forests, shifting sand drifts, and gently undulating hills sculpted by the last Ice Age. The park’s highest point, the Posbank, offers panoramic views over the heath and woodlands, making it a popular destination for visitors.

Ecologically, the park supports a rich biodiversity with habitats for red deer, wild boar, roe deer, foxes, and numerous bird species such as the nightjar and woodlark. The conservation of heathlands and wetlands is a key focus, supporting many rare flora and fauna. Historically, the area has been shaped by traditional grazing and heath management practices that have maintained its open landscapes.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy miles of well-marked hiking and mountain biking trails weaving through diverse terrains. Birdwatching and wildlife spotting are particularly rewarding here, with opportunities to observe animals in their natural environment. The park features visitor facilities including information centers near Rheden and Ellecom and seasonal guided tours highlighting flora and fauna.

The combination of natural beauty, ecological importance, and extensive outdoor recreation makes De Veluwezoom National Park a cherished destination for nature lovers and an exemplary model of Dutch landscape preservation.
